In Shenzen, more than 10 people who consumes the star fruit had died. And now a 66-year-old, Malaysian who has been suffering from kidney ailment fell into coma after eating the start fruits. Yes, all it takes is one fruit or 100 ml of its juice and the ordinarily harmless star fruit transforms poison in a matter of hours for kidney patients.

So does this mean, people without kidney problems should be fine with star fruit ! My take : Not at all !

Prevention is better, right? Universiti Malaya Medical Centre consultant nephrologist said that star fruits contain a neurotoxin which is not present in other fruits. It affects the brain and nerves. In healthy persons, the kidneys filter it out.

But for those with kidney problems, this potent toxin cannot be removed and will worsen the consumers’ conditions. The symptoms of start fruit poisoning include :
~Hiccups
~Numbness and weakness
~Feeling confused
~Agitation
~Epileptic fist

The risk of death is high if you are having kidney ailments ! But healthy individuals should beware of this fruit’s potential toxin too. It could also cripple your vitality if you are not lucky. So don’t take it for granted. It’s better to avoid them.

Concern with oxalates Star fruit contains oxalic acid which can combine with calcium, iron, sodium, magnesium, or potassium to form tiny little crystals with sharp edges known as oxalates. These crystals irritate the tissues.

One should avoid excessive consumption of star fruit on a daily basis. High levels of oxalates in the diet lead to irritation of the digestive system, and particularly of the stomach and kidneys. The oxalates may deplete the availability of calcium and weaken the bone.

Oxalates are also known to precipitate the formation of (calcium oxalate) kidney stones. It is also not advisable to boil or juice the young, immature fruit and consume it to control blood pressure. Excessive consumption of oxalic acid from the young fruit may lead to other side effects. People with kidney problems should avoid the fruit. The oxalates may cause serious intoxication.

Symptoms include insomnia, intractable hiccups, agitation, muscle weakness, and confusion of various degrees. Seizures, and cardio-respiratory arrest and death have been reported.

New Eye Infection, AMO Recall its Complete MoisturePlus Contact Lens Solution. A Dangerous Contact Lens Solution Linked to Acanthamoeba Keratitis & Microbial Keratitis in Addition to Fungal Keratitis. Have your eyes been, once again, placed in danger of Bacterial Eye Infections, vision damage, or loss of sight?

On May 25 2006, AMO (Advanced Medical Optics) announced a recall of their ‘No Rub’ Complete MoisturePlus Multipurpose Contact Solution. Although the company stands by its product and casts the blame on contact lens wearers who ‘improperly store, disinfect or handle’ their contact lenses, the CDC forced AMO to recall Complete Moisture Plus.

This Complete Moisture Plus recall is not so distant from Bausch & Lomb’s recall of ReNu with MoistureLoc, which caused serious injury to many contact lens wearers. AMO’s press release states they have known since January of 2005 about at least 46 patients who claimed to have contracted a unique form of keratitis from the AMO Recall solution.

This keratitis is called ‘acanthamoeba keratitis (AK)’. From all indications, AMO Moisture Plus recall was delayed as long as Bausch did in coming forward and recalling the product; potentially exposing an untold number of unsuspecting contact lens wearers to this painful (AK) infection that can cause permanent vision loss or blindness.

Other reports seem to illustrate a company who knew about the potential link between (AK) and their Complete MoisturePlus Multipurpose Solution since as early as 2004. In 2004, the infection first occurred in more than a dozen people against the normal count of one or two in a year. Dr. Elmer Tu, an ophthalmologist at the University of Illinois, Chicago, along with other doctors attended around 35 patients from May 2003 to September of 2006, 55% of whom were infected due to usage of AMO Complete MoisturePlus recall solution.

According to Dr. Tu, AMO’s Complete MoisturePLUS solution is not defective. It is just not designed to provide a shield to the eyes when they’re exposed to soil or water where the risk of bacterial infection is significant. Julie Zawisza, an FDA spokes person, said,’ The solution is not marketed to protect against the amoeba. But it’s supposed to be free of any type of microorganisms. It’s not supposed to result in anyone getting an infection.’

Once again, one must wonder what corporations who suspect problems with their products are thinking when they wait one, two, or more years before warning the public about a potential hazard provoked or caused by their product. We wonder how much injury must occur before corporate dollars are sufficient.

Acanthamoeba keratitis & Microbial Keratitis patients suffer symptoms very similar to other common bacterial eye infection, but the AK infection can result in the loss of eye sight. If you experience symptoms, including the following, we encourage you to first immediately seek treatment from an experienced, eye care professional:

‘ Eye pain
‘ Eye redness and soreness
‘ Hypersensitivity to light
‘ Reduction in visual acuity
‘ Temporary or, at the worst, permanent blindness

Instead of choosing one of his Directors or his children, he decided to do something different. He called all the young executives in his company together.

He said, ‘It is time for me to step down and choose the next CEO. I have decided to choose one of you. ‘The young executives were shocked, but the boss continued.

One man, named Jim, was there that day and he, like the others, received a seed. He went home and excitedly, told his wife the story. She helped him get a pot, soil and compost and he planted the seed. Everyday, he would water it and watch to see if it had grown. After about three weeks, some of the other executives began to talk about their seeds and the plants that were beginning to grow.

Jim kept checking his seed, but nothing ever grew.

Three weeks, four weeks, five weeks went by, still nothing.

By now, others were talking about their plants, but Jim didn’t have a plant and he felt like a failure.

When the CEO arrived, he surveyed the room and greeted his young executives.

Jim just tried to hide in the back. ‘My, what great plants, trees, and flowers you have grown,’ said the CEO. ‘Today one of you will be appointed the next CEO!’

All of a sudden, the CEO spotted Jim at the back of the room with his empty pot. He ordered the Financial Director to bring him to the front. Jim was terrified. He thought, ‘The CEO knows I’m a failure! Maybe he will have me fired!’

When Jim got to the front, the CEO asked him what had happened to his seed – Jim told him the story.

The CEO asked everyone to sit down except Jim. He looked at Jim, and then announced to the young executives, ‘Behold your next Chief Executive Officer!

His name is Jim!’ Jim couldn’t believe it. Jim couldn’t even grow his seed.

‘How could he be the new CEO?’ the others said.

Then the CEO said, ‘One year ago today, I gave everyone in this room a seed. I told you to take the seed, plant it, water it, and bring it back to me today. But I gave you all boiled seeds;
they were dead – it was not possible for them to grow.

All of you, except Jim, have brought me trees and plants and flowers. When you found that the seed would not grow, you substituted another seed for the one I gave you. Jim was the
only one with the courage and honesty to bring me a pot with my seed in it. Therefore, he is the one who will be the new Chief Executive Officer!’
